Comrade Clarence in Oakland, CA shares his outreach experience
OAKLAND, CA–During my recent outreach effort, I distributed eight copies of The Burning Spear newspaper on behalf of the African People Socialist Party (APSP), a Black socialist organization committed to educating and organizing the African community around issues of self-determination, economic justice, and liberation. The experience was positive and engaging, as the people I approached were respectful, open-minded, and willing to receive the newspaper.
There was no opposition from anyone who accepted a copy of The Burning Spear. Instead of dismissing the publication, many people immediately took the time to scan through its pages and began reading articles that caught their attention. Several individuals expressed genuine curiosity about the topics covered and appreciated the information presented. Their interest led to meaningful conversations about the newspaper and the issues it addresses.
A number of people asked me how often The Burning Spear is published and how frequently I receive copies for distribution. Others wanted to know whether every edition contains the same type of information on Black liberation, community organizing, political education and current events affecting African people worldwide. These questions created opportunities to explain the purpose of the newspaper and the role it plays in sharing the perspectives and activities of the Uhuru Movement.
Overall, the outreach was successful because it sparked conversations and encouraged people to engage with ideas they may not have encountered before. The willingness of community members to read the newspaper and ask thoughtful questions demonstrated an openness to learning more about the issues presented. Passing out The Burning Spear helped increase awareness of the organization and its mission while fostering positive interactions with the public. The experience reinforced the importance of community outreach and political education as effective tools for building relationships and encouraging informed discussion.
