FIRST ANNUAL COMMEMORATION OF NAT TURNER’S SLAVE REBELLION
The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) held its First Annual Commemoration of Nat Turner’s Slave Rebellion Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 1:00 PM at The Nat Turner Park. The Nat Turner Park is located between 18th Avenue, Muhammad Ali Avenue, Boyd Street and Jelliff Avenue in Newark, NJ.
Community Leaders, Activists, and The Friends of Nat Turner Park talked about the slaves who fought and died for freedom. POP representatives and members also spoke including State Chairman Lawrence Hamm.
“The commemoration of the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner was a significant historical event; for the first time people gathered at Nat Turner Park in Newark to remember a specific slave revolt that occurred in the United States. It is important that we never forget those who fought and died in the struggle to abolish slavery in this country,” Hamm stated.
