This August, Black Power 96 is hosting a month-long fundraising campaign, “Black August,” to highlight the theme of African Resistance, from the Haitian Revolution to the rebellions in Ferguson.
August is a month known for African resistance against slavery and oppression worldwide. From the heroic Haitian rebellion in 1791 to the uprising in Ferguson in 2014, August holds many important dates in the history of the African liberation movement.
- Aug. 7, 1970: Jonathan Jackson attacks a Marin County Courthouse to free his brother, Black Panther leader George Jackson “Soledad Brother.”
- Aug. 9, 2014: Ferguson’s black community response to police murder of Mike Brown inspires renewed national resistance.
- Aug. 11, 1965: Watts erupts in 6 days of rebellion against police violence.
- Aug. 17, 1887: Birthday of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, leader of the United Negro Improvement. Association with chapters in 52 countries, originator of the black doll, Harlem Renaissance recording studios and the Black Star shipping line.
- Aug. 21, 1831: Nat Turner leads a month-long massive slave insurrection in Virginia.
- Aug. 22, 1791: Africans launch first successful revolution to abolish slavery and establish black government in Haiti.
- Aug. 27, 1963: Civil Rights leaders hold March on Washington.

On Sunday, August 21st, WBPU Black Power FM Radio, will host a special Black August event “Celebrating African Resistance: From Haiti to Ferguson” in Akwaaba Hall at the Uhuru House in St. Petersburg.
We will be featuring short film clips of African resistance worldwide, a keynote presentation by Chairman Omali Yeshitela, and a delicious Karamu (African feast).
Viewers from around the world will be able to tune in to blackpower96.org to watch our event Live.
The event is part of our month-long fund drive to raise resources to build and launch St. Petersburg’s newest community radio station serving the south side African community.
Our “Celebrating African Resistance: From Haiti to Ferguson” event will also feature performances by local artists in a showcase of what will soon be heard on WBPU Black Power Radio.
The new radio station is a project of the African People’s Education and Defense Fund, whose mission is to defend the human and civil rights of the African community and to address the grave disparities in education, health and economic development.
Shows on Black Power 96 Radio will feature stories and talent from the African community where African people can speak in our own voice, telling our own stories and serving our own struggle for self-determination and the power over our own lives. It will provide the opportunity for local businesses to promote themselves and build economic strength in our community.
