Uhuru Pies wins friends and resources for economic development at the San Francisco Green Festival

The African People’s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF) launched our 30th Annual Uhuru Pie Campaign in Northern California at the San Francisco Green Festival November 6-7, 2010.

Special thanks to Jeff Marcous and Dharma Merchant Services and Cindy Warlick and the team at Seven-Star Inc. for sponsoring APEDF’s exhibitor booth. Their contributions were instrumental in making it possible for APEDF to participate in this dynamic event that had participation from many hundreds of exhibitors promoting a sustainable environment.

APEDF, recently designated a ’Green Economy Ally’ by Green America, truly fulfills the essence of the green community’s goals for achieving a sustainable community. Number one is calling for social justice as the foundation of the economy, ecology and a sustainable world.

The Uhuru Pies were a hit at the Green Festival. After all, who can refuse sweet potato, pecan and apple crumb pies with organic and locally grown ingredients that raise funds for institutions and programs that address the disparities faced by the African community in health, education and economic development!

APEDF is not limited to raising funds for one entrepreneur or family, but contributing to creating community commerce within the black community itself through economic development by and for the community.

The Uhuru Pie sales will contribute to the ability of installing a community commercial kitchen and a production and recording studio in the St. Petersburg Florida Uhuru House community center.

Thanks so much to all the volunteers that contributed their time and energy, especially to the Oakland Tech and Skline High School BuildOn students.

We look forward to getting back to all those who want to further the pie fundraiser and APEDF with marketing and green business acumen; outlets for pie sales; baking skills and those who signed up to sell Uhuru Pies.

We’re looking forward to table sites in San Francisco; delivering pies to Napa College; kitchen opportunities in Emeryville; and promoting Uhuru Pies on radio and in print media.
