50 years ago Malcolm X and Fidel Castro met in Harlem

In September of 1960, the African Liberation Movement was in high gear, asserting its independent and revolutionary trajectory.

The meeting between Cuba's new revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro, who was in New York for a United Nations General Assembly meeting, and Malcolm X was an indication of the development of the black revolutionary movement.

During this same General Assembly session, Malcolm also met with Guinea's (Conakry) new leader, Sékou Touré, Egypt's Abdel Nasser, and Kenneth Kaunda, who would later become Zambia's first post-colonial president.

As a show of solidarity with the African Liberation Movement in the US, Comandante Fidel Castro and the Cuban entourage stayed at the Theresa Hotel in Harlem.
