St. Petersburg, FL—On November 21, 2013, the St Pete branch of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement (InPDUM) hosted a press conference to expose the rampant police terror in the African community of south St Pete and announce the African community defense plan.
Assembling in Uhuru Park (also known as Silver Lake Park) and attended by over 20 community members as well as Uhuru News and Radio, Fox News, Bay News 9, and Creative Loafing, the press conference was held to address what InPDUM St Pete's Chimurenga Waller described as "an ongoing issue in the black community that goes back to the murder of Tyron Lewis in 1996."
The press conference allowed for victims and family members of victims of police terror in the African community to speak out about the brutal colonial conditions of police containment imposed on the community. Debbie Newkirk, the sister of Anthony Newkirk who was shot six times by the police, and Jennoris Green, a young African whose brutalization at the hands of the police was videotaped by Uhuru Movement organizers, addressed the media and the community.
