Join the Oakland Freedom Summer Project – support black community self-determination and economic development

The Oakland Freedom Summer Project, July 9-29, 2012, is a key phase of the renovation of the Uhuru House African community center in East Oakland.

The Uhuru House represents more than 30 years of campaigns led by the Black Power Movement to win African community control of the economy, housing, health care, education and police.

Goals of the Oakland Freedom Summer Project include bringing together the resources, skills and materials to complete the renovation of the Uhuru House in East Oakland.

The renovated Uhuru House will embody the principle of organizational self-reliance and economic development by housing the Uhuru Jiko (Kitchen) and Akwaaba (Welcome) Hall.

The Uhuru House will be a dynamic hub of political activity for the African population of the Bay Area and surrounding region.

The renovation campaign urgently needs your participation and the support of skilled and non-skilled workers

Are you:
* socially conscious
* experienced in any phase of construction
* experienced in phone donation campaigns
* or have the desire to learn?

Do you or someone you know have skills as a:
* general contractor or stucco contractor
* phone or online donation coordinator
* plumber, carpenter or electrician
* roofer
* or mechanical engineer?

This project is also addressing our economic and health conditions, such as the fact that 75 cents of every retail dollar spent leaves East Oakland, and that a child born in Oakland Hills will live on average 15 years more than an African or Mexican child born in nearby neighborhoods.

Challenge these conditions by supporting the renovation of the Uhuru House.
