March in East Oakland Calls for Black Community Control of the Police

On Saturday, January 17th at 12 noon at the East Oakland Uhuru House at 7911 MacArthur Blvd, members of the Oakland chapter of the Uhuru (freedom) movement and other individuals and organizations will gather for a march calling for Black Community Control of the Police.

The Uhuru Movement’s demand for Black Community Control of the Police comes during this time of massive demonstrations across the U.S. in response to the refusal of the state to indict the police murderers of Mike Brown and Eric Garner.

The Oakland police department is no different from other police entities in the U.S., functioning as an occupying army in the African community. Since 1990, the Oakland has spent $74 million dollars to settle at least 417 lawsuits accusing its police officers of brutality, misconduct and other civil rights violations.

Black Community Control of the Police is a democratic demand in that it places control of the police directly in the hands of those most affected by police behavior, giving the community the power to hire, fire, discipline, fund and train police.
