Mexican and African liberation organizations Unión del Barrio and APSP celebrate 25 years of principled relationship

On February 17, the African People’s Socialist Party and Unión del Barrio commemorated 25 years of principled unity between our two parties. The event took place at the Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego, California, Occupied Mexico.

Over 150 people turned out to listen to Chairman Omali Yeshitela speak on the role of a revolutionary party in the era of an empire in decline. He laid out the historical foundation upon which the world capitalist system rests — colonialism and imperialism.

Among the speakers were Harry Simon and Belinda Zamacona on behalf of Unión del Barrio, Penny Hess, chairwoman of the African People’s Solidarity Committee, and Laura Moreno, member of Unión del Barrio, the MC for the event.

The single most important message was the need to join a revolutionary organization with a political program to provide consciousness and political direction to the growing masses of people who are rising up against the most repressive and brutal terror unleashed by U.S. imperialism under the direction of Barack Obama, white power capitalism’s representative in a black face.

The central objective of this event was to recognize the strategically important relationship between our two organizations and our role in uniting our people, the Mexican and African working class, in our collective struggle against capitalism and the building of a new economic social order where there are no oppressors or oppressed, no exploiters or exploited, no slave or slave master; in sum, the struggle to build a socialist future and kill off capitalism, a parasite on the body of humanity.

The event ended with a question and answer session where the people were able to clarify important ideological questions such as the importance of self-determination, organization and revolutionary struggle in our search for social justice, peace and socialism.

Unión del Barrio will be deepening our 25 year history by uniting with the February 19-21 International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement’s (InPDUM) Convention, to take place in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, and joining the Black is Back Coalition’s Conference on the Other Wars, scheduled to take place in Washington D.C. on March 26, 2011.
