People’s Organization for Progress to hold statewide march in honor of MLK Jr.

The following statement is from the People's Organization for Progress, a grassroots, mass organization that works for social and economic justice.

NEWARK, NJ — The People's Organization for Progress (POP) will have a Martin Luther King Day Statewide March for Peace and Justice.  The march will take place on Dr. King’s birthday, Saturday, January 15, 2011, 12:00pm. starting at the corner of Broad and Market Streets in Newark, New Jersey.

We ask that you share this information with and encourage colleagues, family, friends, community organizations, churches, students and businesses to participate in this important event.

"The purpose of the march is to draw attention to grassroots concerns including the catastrophic and unjust U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, police brutality, the realization of racial equality and
the violence that is plaguing our communities," POP Chairman Lawrence Hamm stated.

"Also, this march allows us to take time from our busy schedule to remember and reflect on Dr. King’s vision of community and world of peace, love and understanding and to recommit ourselves to the high ideals which Dr. King personified.

"Just as Dr. King opposed the war in Vietnam, we must oppose these unjust wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," Hamm said.  On this day, we will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose life was committed to the struggle for all people.

Chairman Hamm strongly believes that if Dr. King were alive today, he would be marching for a massive jobs program, an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the realization of racial equality.  Let all of us strive to continue the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"In response many incidents of police brutality, growing racial inequality in this country, increasing poverty, violations of civil rights and voting rights, and the ongoing U.S. wars, we are asking
all POP members, supporters, and the general public to engage in selective buying this weekend," POP Chairman Lawrence Hamm stated.

Finally, POP is calling for a “Hold Your Dollars Campaign” to take place during the Martin Luther King weekend starting Saturday, January 15th thru Monday, January 17th.

"We request that people do not make purchases at major stores and big businesses this weekend. However, we are asking everyone to support black owned, minority owned, and community based businesses this weekend and all year-round,"  Hamm said.

“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
