Uhuru Pie season is here! Support African economy!

Uhuru Pies Oakland new head baker, Ngoyi Folayan introduces a new product to this year’s offering: Uhuru Sweets in a Jar, a spice cake with cinnamon cream cheese butter-cream frosting.

For more than 30 years, the Uhuru holiday pie sale has been a progressive holiday tradition in the San Francisco Bay Area, bringing social justice to the holiday table.

Uhuru Foods and Pies is an African economic development institution of Black Star Industries (BSI) jumpstarting an independent African economy being built by the Uhuru Movement. It includes programs like independent media, screened apparel and African marketplaces.

Uhuru Pies are available in several flavors including its famous Sweet Potato pie, as well as standards like Apple, Pecan and Pumpkin. A vegan version of Uhuru Sweets in a Jar creation is also available.

While in college in the Midwest, Folayan wanted to learn how to make and decorate cakes. She got a position in the bakery department of the local grocery store where she hoped to learn.

While working there, she was restricted to mostly small tasks, such as cutting bread. So, Folayan left that job, trained herself how to bake and decorate her own beautiful and unique cakes and opened a bakery with her sister. Now Ngoyi is bringing her talents to Uhuru Pies!

“I am so excited to have the opportunity to bring my skills to Uhuru Foods & Pies in Oakland, CA,” says Folayan. “I am honored to become a part of the economic development process by and for African people. Self-determination is the highest expression of a democracy and you can’t have self determination without economic self reliance.

“I am grateful for my past experiences in life that have led me to this point. With power in the hands of the African working class, young, enthused Africans won’t have to strive for acceptance from the bourgeoisie. We will be here to offer the training they require and empower them to be strong leaders for the movement. Uhuru!!”

Uhuru Pies are available at pop-up locations. Between December 9th and 24th. You can request a free delivery of Uhuru Pies to locations in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz.
