TyRon Lewis Community Gym celebrates its Grand Re-Opening!

On Saturday, January 14, the newly renovated All People's TyRon Lewis Community Gym celebrated its grand re-opening. The celebration program included a free personal training session, door prizes, grand opening of Smoothie Cafe, and live performances by Bella.

Ghett Real services were in attendance giving free HIV/AIDS tests and Healthy Start/Healthy Families were also present giving out health information.

There was a multitude of presenters, which included Omali Yeshitela, leader of the Uhuru Movement who talked about the history of the gym. City Council member Wengay Newton, expressed support for APEDF's mission and the TyRon Lewis Community Gym.

Rebecca Phillips, who is the Health Equity Officer and Community Liaison with the Pinellas County Health Department, spoke about taking ownership of health. Alma Kicklighter with Ghett Real Services spoke about HIV/AIDS awareness and the importance of getting tested.

Other presenters included Claude Williams from the City of St. Petersburg Business Assistance Center, who spoke of the importance of community based institutions such as the gym and smoothie cafe to the overall economic health of St. Petersburg. Raynetta Mobley, the successful owner of Simply Natural Boutique, spoke as did Elihu Brayboy who made a presentation on economic development. Personal trainer Damon Reio held an incredible seminar on Fat Loss.

The crowd was fascinated by the marvelous renovation the TyRon Lewis Gym had experienced. With a small extension, fresh paint job, additional equipment and new smoothie bar and courtyard, everyone was mesmerized.

The TyRon Lewis Gym is truly a gym of our own, personalized for the community, with all the equipment needed to get fit. Women, men, teens and seniors are welcome. We have personalized workouts and nutrition plans that focus on individual goals. We also have a steam room to help you to relax and soothe you muscles after a workout.

The All People's TyRon Lewis Community Gym is located at 1327 Martin Luther King Street South in St. Petersburg, FL. We are open Monday through Friday 5am-9pm and Saturday 8am-noon. The TyRon Lewis Gym is part of the Wellness program of the African People's Education and Defense Fund, a non-profit 501C3 organization which develops and institutionalizes programs to address the grave disparities in education, health, healthcare and economic development faced by African people and defends the human and civil rights of African people.
