“Manslaughter conviction in the Akai Gurley case is not justice”

NEW YORK, NY—On February 11, 2016 NYPD cop Peter Liang was convicted for manslaughter in the Akai Gurley case. Sources say the jury did not believe the pig’s defense, that his “gun fired accidentally”.

U.S. imperialism has been shaken at the foundation in its genocide against African people. This current period of resistance by the African working class has forced the State to react to the police killing in the Akai Gurley case.

Liang and his partner Shaun Landau, were patrolling the Louis H. Pink Houses in East New York, Brooklyn on November 20, 2014. Liang shot and killed Gurley in a stairwell while he walked with his girlfriend, 27-year-old Melissa Butler.

The fact that Liang’s first response to shooting Akai was to text his union representative is said to have played a part in the jury’s decision to convict him. Gurley laid dying in the stairwell while Liang and his partner argued, incommunicado for six minutes.

Butler went for help when her boyfriend, Akai was shot by Liang. Butler tried to administer CPR to save Gurley’s life. Liang and Landau did nothing.

NYPD procedures and the darken stairwell in the Louis H. Pink Houses were the topics of discussion in the white media when the Akai Gurley shooting happened initially.

The revolutionary demand for “Black Community Control of the police” speaks to the State’s policy of police containment in the African community which causes the murder of Africans like Akai Gurley.

A period of resistance

In December 2014, one month after Gurley was murdered, a State grand jury in Staten Island, NY failed to bring charges against officers responsible for the murder of Eric Garner.

Garner was put into an “illegal chokehold” by NYPD pig Daniel Pantaleo while other pigs wrestled him to the ground, cuffing his hands and grinding Garner’s head into the pavement.

On December 20, 2014 Ismaaiyl Brinsley killed two cops in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn after he vowed to get revenge for the police killings of Eric Garner and Mike Brown, who was murdered by Ferguson, MO pig Darren Wilson in the same year.

Wilson was not indicted for the murder of Mike Brown.

African resistance unleashed a fierce challenge to the State in MO, invigorating African people everywhere.

Freddie Gray was murdered by the pigs in Baltimore in April 2015, after which the African community waged a serious struggle against the State. Currently, six pigs have been indicted in the Freddie Gray case.

Since Liang’s conviction, his supporters have petitioned the white house to “Demand Brooklyn DA Kenneth P. Thompson to withdraw indictment against Asian minority officer Peter Liang!”

The petition has received 143,980 signatures.

There is no distinction in the ethnic background of a cop when they represent the State. The State is an oppressive organization with the purpose of maintaining the oppression of African people.

Although Liang has been fired from the NYPD and he faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced on April 14, 2016, this is not justice.

This is not justice because in New York the pigs who killed Ramarley Graham [2013], Kimani Gray [2012], and Shantel Davis [2012], walk the streets freely today.

The oppressor State is incapable of offering justice to the oppressed African population. Revolution is the only answer.
