The 90th birthday of Malcolm X will be celebrated Friday, May 15 at 6:30 pm at Akwaaba Hall in the national office of the African People’s Socialist Party, 1245 18th Ave. South, St. Petersburg, FL.
Sponsored by Uhuru Tours and Speakers Bureau, African People’s Socialist Party Chairman Omali Yeshitela will be the featured speaker.
Showcasing the enduring legacy and relevance of the great leader of the 1960s whose 90th birthday would have been on May 19 of this year, Chairman Omali will show the relationship of this period of struggle to the era of the Black Power Movement of the 1960s.
With a powerful consciousness rising up again among the African community following the fierce resistance of Africans in Ferguson, MO following the police murder of 18-year-old Michael Brown last August, the legacy of Malcolm X is being carried on today by the Party and the Uhuru Movement.
Also featured at the celebration will be dynamic poetry by popular Tampa Bay spoken word artist Dennis Amadeus from Black on Black Rhyme and a performance by the talented local dancers Reality DC.
Actors Josh Goff playing Martin Luther King, Jr and Federico Gordon as Malcolm X will perform a scene from the brilliant play, The Meeting, a fictionalized conversation between the two great leaders.
Mwamba Yeshitela and Weusi Waller will present a trailer from their upcoming film Beatnik about life in Oakland, CA in the 1980s.
