On Sunday, May 20, 2012, the Oakland Freedom Summer Project and the International Peoples Democratic Uhuru Movement will host a special townhall meeting as part of the Campaign for African Community Self-Defense (CACSD).
At this meeting we will receive a special orientation on the White Crane Style of Gung Fu by Sis Mary Montgomery, an African woman who is a 30-plus year veteran of the style.
The Campaign for African Community Self-Defense is a campaign designed to end all forms of colonial violence that the African community experiences worldwide.
As stated in the CACSD overview, "Colonial violence comes in various forms, from such incidents as the assassination of Trayvon Martin by white nationalist vigilante George Zimmerman, to the neocolonial proxy wars being waged in such regions of Africa as Ivory Coast and Congo, where over seven million African people have died…From the police murder of Oscar Grant in Oakland to the economic quarantine of the African community in Philadelphia – for poverty itself is a form of colonial violence which is enforced by the police who stand between African people and our resources."
While we understand that kicks and punches are no match for police bullets, we believe that the process of Africans learning ancient gung fu styles and techniques will contribute to the culture of resistance and discipline necessary to engage in higher levels of resistance against the colonial occupation of our communities – whether it is the police in Oakland or AFRICOM in Uganda.
Come out and learn how to fight. Join the movement that fights for the community!
