African People’s Socialist Party denounces murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, demands withdrawal of police

We, the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP), led by Chairman Omali Yeshitela, denounce yet another brutal police murder of an African man, George Floyd in Minneapolis.

In response our Party is holding an international mobilization in support of African people to resist the colonial State and to fight for power over our lives.

This week footage was released of the vicious murder of 46-year-old Floyd.

A Minneapolis cop, Derek Chauvin, pinned Floyd down with his knee, suffocating him. In response, African people around the world and in the U.S. have risen up in outrage.

The sentiment from George Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd reflects the sentiment of African people: “They executed my brother in broad daylight. I am just tired of seeing black people dying.”

Floyd’s murder follows in the wake of thousands of police and white civilian murders of African people year after year, most recently Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, and Breonna Taylor who was killed by the Louisville police who invaded her house in March.

There has been a constant stream of murder, violence and oppression by the colonial State and white people dating back to when we were first kidnapped and brought here in chains from Africa.

We are not appealing to the conscience of cops or begging the colonial State, built at our expense and on our stolen labor, to be reformed.

This is one more example of genocide against African people. Genocide does not result from racism, the bad ideas in white peoples’ heads. It results from colonialism, the total domination of a whole people by a foreign and hostile State power and the white colonial nation for profit at our expense

The only way we can ever protect our African people is through political and economic power in our own hands. We demand Black Community Control of the Police, Black Power and reparations.

This is the latest, horrific murder in this period of escalating attacks on African people as we face the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, labelled by Chairman Omali Yeshitela as “the colonial virus.”

African people are dying at a rate of 2.5 times higher than white people from the colonial COVID-19 virus, and in some states and cities African deaths are 70 percent of the total. African patients have been left to die in hospitals and denied access to testing.

The Party’s response to the murder of George Floyd is the same as our response to the coronavirus: the struggle of African people is for power over every aspect of our lives. The African People’s Socialist Party has always gone further than protest. We have built over 50 institutions of dual and contending power in the hands of the African working class.

We say death to colonialism; colonialism must go. Death to colonial white power! African people must be free and liberated.

We demand:

  1. The immediate withdrawal of the colonial police force from the African community everywhere.
  2. An end to the public policy of police containment, to be replaced with a public policy of economic development.
  3. Reparations to the family of George Floyd and the entire African Nation from the U.S. and western imperialist countries.
  4. Black Community Control of the Police, to deconstruct the colonial relationship that brings in the colonial police as a standing army.
