PHILADELPHIA–The Northern Region of the African People’s Socialist Party-USA strengthened organization and political education during its Saturday, June 13 mini-intensive by integrating collective study directly into the work of organizing the long-standing economic institution of the One Africa! One Nation! Uhuru Flea Market in Philadelphia.
Eight comrades and supporters participated in the day’s activities, demonstrating in practice the Party’s understanding that theory must guide our practical revolutionary work. Throughout the market day—a day that can last upward of 12 hours depending on which part of the Northern Region comrades are traveling from—comrades paused at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for hour-long study sessions before concluding with a summation after breakdown.
We studied foundational and key Party materials, including the Office of the Deputy Chair’s report to the 2026 Plenary for an overview of the struggle for dual and contending power, Chairman Omali’s writings on the African Nation from “An Uneasy Equilibrium” and practical trainings conducive to running and recruiting at our marketplaces like how to give effective public presentations and how to MC. A study packet was also developed for each comrade to facilitate political education after the conclusion of the mini-intensive.
The mini-intensive resulted in concrete organizational victories. The Party won a new member who signed up on the spot at the Party table during the market. Comrades also conducted outreach among vendors to strengthen participation in the Uhuru Flea Market, won all the renegade vendors who set up without permission from the Uhuru staff to officially register and pay for vendor spaces, sold 50 copies of The Burning Spear, sold a copy of “One Africa! One Nation!” and completed a Burning Spear Media inventory for the Northern Region.
Participants also summed up contradictions encountered during the day, including interruptions to study sessions caused by market activity and the challenge of carrying out the work with only five Party members staffing the event. Despite these contradictions, the mini-intensive demonstrated the Party’s commitment to deepening ideological development while building and growing the economic institutions for African self-determination.
